Your kitchen cabinets are exposed to more water, steam, and other harmful factors than most other cabinets in your house. It is common for kitchen cabinets to be replaced before any other cabinets in your home are installed due to the wear and tear they are subjected to.

1. Water Damage

Swollen cabinets, doors that won't shut all the way, or discoloration all over the surface? If this is the case, you may have water damage. Wooden kitchen cabinets are particularly vulnerable to water damage. Even if you don't have leaks, the water in your kitchen will eventually harm your wooden cabinets.

Water-damaged cabinets can be repaired in some cases. if the following conditions exist, you may have more significant water damage:

●     Wood has begun to rot.

●     Inside or outside, cabinets are leaking.

●     There is delamination on the outside.

●     The hue of the wood has begun to darken or otherwise alter.

●     Mold has begun to grow on the cabinets.

●     Cabinets are difficult to open or close.

Getting to the bottom of where the water is coming is always the first step in dealing with water damage. Next, you'll need to ensure that the cabinet is completely dry. You can perform repairs once the water has dried if that is practicable. This will necessitate the replacement of some parts and the use of bleach to remove stains. Before doing any work on your cabinets, ensure that they can be repaired.

2. Frustrating Overall Performance

Another sign that you should replace your cabinets rather than repair them is if they don't perform as expected. It doesn't matter how aesthetically pleasant the refinishing of your cabinets appear; if they don't work well, you'll always be looking for a new design.

If you see any of these signs, it's time to replace your cabinets.

●     Remove items from your cabinets if you need to access other items tucked in the back due to a misaligned cabinet. This can happen, for example, if you open two cabinet doors at once.

●     The drawers will not open without becoming stuck, creating an unusual noise, or causing some other trouble; the drawers will not open.

This is a warning indicator that there is more harm going on underneath. The problem will not be solved by simply removing and refacing the drawers.

3. "Soft" Cabinets

Is your cabinetry starting to sag? Is there any flex to the cabinet walls when you press on them? If this is the case, your cabinets are horribly damaged, soon falling apart. If the cabinet sides are not in good shape, then spending money on aesthetic modifications is a waste.

4. Moldy Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets are only one of many places where mold may thrive. In the early stages, mold may be cleansed and prevented, but if left undiagnosed, it will continue to develop and deteriorate unless discovered and dealt with. Mold may damage the overall integrity of your cabinets, but it can also be harmful to the health of you and your family if it is present in large areas. As soon as you see signs of mold, you should find the source of the water leak so that the problem doesn't return.

5. Bad Condition of the Cabinet's Box

There will be no support for new cabinet doors if the cabinet box is too worn to re-drill new holes or attach new hinges. If you can't work with the present wood, you'll have to replace the entire cabinet box rather than risk losing money on fixes that won't work. It's important to check the wood for new holes and hinges before buying new doors or sand and refinishing your existing ones.

Is It Necessary to Fix Your Cabinets?

Refacing cabinets include repainting the exterior, adding a veneer layer to the cabinet box, and replacing the doors. This is a popular renovation method since cabinets may last for a long time. Another straightforward approach to brighten up a sturdy set of cabinets is to add new hardware, such as new handles that provide a fresh impression.

If you want to change the look and feel of your cabinets without spending a fortune, you can simply reface them. Each cabinet door and/or drawer will cost around $150 to repair. This does add-up, but it's not as expensive as replacing all of your cabinets.

Asking yourself how long your cabinets will survive after you do the needed repairs. This may help you choose whether or not repairing them is worthwhile. Eventually, you'll have to get rid of them all. Only if your cabinets are in generally good shape and are expected to survive for many more years should you reface them.
